Masks of Mexico and Guatemala

Decorative Straw mask

Taxco, Guerrero

19 inches, woven palm fiber

The eyes and mouth have been left open so the mask can be worn. There is a braided string on the backside for wearing or hanging. The fibers have been dyed red, green yellow and purple. For a 40 year old item, it is in good condition with slight fading on the front. Tourist masks like this have been sold in Taxco for years. The famous tin masks with the glass eyes are also made there. For and interesting comparison check out the corn husk mask in the Native American section.
