Mexican Fariseo Mask Holy Week Dances, El Doctor, Queretaro, Mexico 11 inches long, painted glued fabric, leather, long ixtle fiber In the village of El Doctor, the people make their masks by the unusual process of glued fabric formed over a mold. Nowhere else are masks made of this material. During Holy Week celebrations they use them to portray a wide range of characters, including men, devils and animals. Called Fariseos, they furnish the comic relief to an otherwise serious religious procession. The ixtle hair on this mask is long and full. See more about the masks of El Doctor in Mauldins "Masks of Mexico" pages 93-95. $230
