The hornbill bird plays an important role in Senufo mythology. Often they are carved even smaller than this one. The Reading Art Museum in Pennsylvania has a huge one that must weigh over 100 lbs. They are always highly stylized. The stepped, circular base on this one indicates it was a decorative lid.
