Pineapple Tureen San Jose de Gracia, Michoacan, Mexico 21.5 inches, glazed terra cotta The town of San Jose de Gracia was famous for this elaborate form of decorated ceramics. The technique required the application of similar shaped pieces of clay to the vessel. The glaze of choice was often a solid dark green, allowing light and shadow to define the strongly textured surface. See the work of Hilario Alejos Madrigal on pages 72-75 of Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art. This piece was collected in the early 1980s and probably was made by Hilarios mother, Elisa Madrigal Martinez. Large, heavy and fragile, we will pack it with great care. $350
