Nelson Islands, Alaska 10.75 inches, painted white spruce Artist’s statement: The inspiration for this mask was a Yupik warrior who outwitted his enemies in the Bow and Arrow Wars that actually occurred in the 1820’s. The stories of these cruel wars are still told by Yupik elders today. I carve and paint my work from beginning to end. My son Noah also carves and paints in the Yupik way. The Iron Oxide Red, Black and White are the traditional colors, and the mask has a carved hollow back which is signed with my name and the double harpoons symbols I use as my sign since my wife passed. She used the double raven tracks to mark my carving that she painted, and her son Noah uses them now. While I am not Yupik, this is the art style I learned as a young man and continue to create for myself and my family. I enjoy telling stories which in turn inspire my carvings. Richard Wisecarver$350
