Shaman animal spirit mask Yupik people, Southwest Alaska 13 inches, painted wood, antlers Here is a magnificent Yupik mask from Alaska that could represent a friendly animal spirit in a shamanistic performance. It has real caribou horns-- the other 4 projectiles are skillfully carved, very small caribou legs. Carved by John McIntyre in Bethel, Alaska, in 2004. Fortunately, there are still talented Native Americans creating fine masks in the Northwest. Thank you, Tom, for sharing. 2-8-11 (114 Mystery Mask)
