Shaman animal spirit mask

Yupik people, Southwest Alaska

13 inches, painted wood, antlers

Here is a magnificent Yupik mask from Alaska that could represent a friendly animal spirit in a shamanistic performance. It has real caribou horns-- the other 4 projectiles are skillfully carved, very small caribou legs. Carved by John McIntyre in Bethel, Alaska, in 2004.  Fortunately, there are still talented Native Americans creating fine masks in the Northwest.
