Chief’s
mask
Astro people, Goroka, PNG
14 inches, palm wood, sticks, plant fiber, resin, natural pigments
This wonderful mask was among the souvenirs of a missionary who worked
in the PNG highlands for a number of years. He left little in the way of
notes, but fortunately the snapshot has survived. It shows clearly the
same mask being worn by a tribal chief. There is a frame of bent sticks
forming the inside of the helmet, so it fits quite well on the head. The
stick with the feather can be placed anywhere in the hair.
