Hornbill mask & costume Karama, Gulf Province, Papua New Guinea, Oceania 26 in., cane frame, tapa cloth, coconut fiber, banana leaf fiber beard, cassowary and cockatoo feathers Made by Jack Evorea Feroro for the Loujova tribe who were scheduled to dance in Australia for a cultural festival in late 2001, but due to the Sept 11 attacks the festival was cancelled. These new, but completely authentic costumes, were specially commissioned for the festival as an effort to rekindle interest in Papuan Gulf culture. This one is a Jovea Hokore (hornbill). The mask comes with a dance costume comprising grass skirt, grass armlets and leglets, and a painted tapa cloth poncho. Jack is not included but he says he is open to offers from eligible females who own lots of pigs. SOLD
