New Guinea Spirit mask Angriman people, Middle Sepik River, Papua New Guinea, Oceania 23 inches, wood with woven cane edge and cassowary feathers Today this kind of mask is unique to the middle Sepik village of Angriman. It originally represented the creator diety onWokeo Island. However, in order to avoid a death curse put on Angriman by the nearby village of Tambunam, the men of Angriman bought a new identity from the Wokeo people. They now use this mask as part of their new identity. It is quite large and heavy. This particular mask is illustrated in the book, "Masks from Around the World."
