PNG Mindja Mask Nokuma people, Upper Sanchi River, Papua New Guinea, Oceania 25 inches, heavy wood with natural pigments One of three objects that figure prominently in the annual yam harvest festival, the Mindja functions both as a plaque and a mask. It is involved in rituals conducted after the annual yam harvest. Each deity has its own set of complex rituals. The other two are Yina and Nogwi. The Mindja is a female deity and is always present in the Haus Tambaran. It also is important in healing. These masks/boards were originally a Kwoma creation, but have been adopted by the neighboring Nokuma people. It's a stunning piece! SOLD
