Bone mask Timor, Indonesia, Oceania 5 inches long, carved animal bone This is an especially primitive example of the bone masks designed to scare off evil spirits while enhancing the spiritual and healing powers of the shaman. Some of these masks are much more elaborate with complex scrimshaw decoration. Illustrated in the book, "Masks from Around the World."
