The art of the Solomon Islands is
characterized by its intricate designs which utilize inlays of pearl
shell. The design on this mask is in that tradition, though the medium
is black and white paint. Masquerade there is not as common as in other
parts of Melanesia, so I’m not sure if this is meant to be worn or used
in any way other than for sale to tourists.
