15 inches, bamboo root

Here is a nice older version of the wall hanging from China which I call Bamboo Root Man. Probably the most popular carving from a natural form, it has been sold to tourists and collectors for many years. The character’s cap is the beginning of the bamboo stalk, the face is carved from the thick top part of the tap root just under ground with many of the branch roots left on to simulate a man’s hair. How this is achieved is easy to see from the rear.
