Maonan people, Guangxi, China 14 inches, painted wood From the Xianan country of Huaijiang county, Guangxi Province, this particular character is called Sanjie and is used by the Maonan minority in a play about ghosts. The Maonan share a love of festivals and colorful dress with the Zhuang, and speak a related language. They are farmers, who grow millet and buckwheat. The Maonan have a population of some 72,000 people most of whom live in Guangxi Autonomous Region. In the 1964 census, there were 183 nationalities registered, among which the government officially recognizes 54. As education and personal wealth increase, the Chinese majority have become interested in the art of ethnic minorities. I don’t think that nice used masks like this will be on the market for long.
