Old monk mask Pyolsandae dance, Yangju, South Korea 10 inches, painted wood with cotton hood In the dance drama this character becomes infatuated with the pretty girl and trys to seduce her. He is an ugly old guy. The dots on his face are supposed to be pox marks or some sort of skin disease. The Yangju Pyeolsandae Nori is a very popular folk dance in Korean history. There are over 20 characters. Red, black, white and other bright colors help to identify the character, many of which appear to have deformed features. Most of them are meant to ridicule various professionals and other members of the upper class. Beautifully carved and painted, there is the traditional cloth hood which pulls over the dancer’s head and helps to secure the mask.
