Thai Phi Ta mask

Dan Sai, Loe, Thailand

22 inches, painted palm frond, basket work, wood, cloth

Phi Ta Khon is a type of masked procession celebrated on the first day of a three-day Buddhist merit-making holiday know in Thai as "Boon Pra Wate". Participants dress up like ghosts and monsters wearing huge masks made from coconut palm fronds topped with a wicker rice steamer. There is a lot of music and dancing, as the faithful come to commemorate the return of Buddha with ceremonies, celebrations and the donning of masks. The nose is carved wood. As you can see, the whole thing is painted with great attention to detail. This very unusual mask is found only in a few villages in the remote mountains of NE Thailand.
