Animal spirit mask Piaroa-Huarime people, Orinoko River region, Venezuela 12 inches, basketry covered with beeswax and mud, bark cloth hood From the Amazon region of Southern Venezuela, this mask probably represents the marmoset, a small simian which is believed to have a special affinity toward men. The bold stripes provide an animated look when being danced. The people start with a woven fiber frame onto which they attach a hood of palm cloth that covers the head and shoulders. The face is painted with a heavy coating of darkened beeswax and white clay. Excellent condition. This piece is illustrated in "Masks from Around the World- The Collection of Robert A. Ibold." A similar example can be seen in "Arts of the Amazon", edited by Barbara Braun, p. 46.) SOLD
