Pig mask Central Amazon region, Brazil 13 inches, wood with animal hair Collected 20 miles west of Manaus in 1967 by Charles Ford, an American engineer who was working in the area at that time. I believe the mask depicts a Brazillian tapir, which is native to South America, as well as other parts of the world. This mask is not typical of Amazonian masks and could be exceedingly rare. A collector tells me that it might be Pase, Taruma, or Capueni. "The Pase are probably still around, as their territory was fairly large stretching up the Rio Negro. TheTaruma occupied the area around what is now Manaus and probably no longer exist. The Capueni traditionally had a small territory right along the Amazon about 50 km from Manaus, west of the city. They may be the group that made this mask." SOLD
