Yurupari Mask Ticuna people, Amazon 20 inches, carved wood, bark cloth hood This is a rare and beautiful example of a Ticuna (Tukuna) hooded Indian mask from the Brazilian Amazon forest, where the Ticuna nation lives near the borders of Peru and Columbia. For over 400 years, the Ticuna tribes have survived the constant threat of violent extermination and forced integration policies by Western society. One of the last large groups left in Brazil, the Ticuna are known for their sensitive artistry, whose talents include basketry, wood and stone sculpture, and mask making. This Yurupari (hooded) mask was collected in the mid-1970s and is in good condition with some wear on the top of the hood. The mask, of hollowed, solid wood, is carved with beautiful minimalist abstract form. Note the remnants of red paint in the mouth, black brows, and nice patina. SOLD
