Monkey Mask

Yanomano people, Amazon

10.5 inches, stain, wood, bark cloth

Made by the Yanomani people before the gold and diamond rush practically ended their culture on the banks of the Rio Negro close to the Venezuelan border. The hood is beaten tree bark and the mask is made with light wood. Colored ink is made with natural plants. Sewn with a kind of hemp. Collected in 1976. The large photo shows how it displays on a wall. Side view shows how the hood fits over the dancer’s head. The overall length is 17 inches with hood included.
