Devil figure w mask Oruro, Bolivia 11.5 inches, painted ceramic, cloth The devil mask captures the essence of the Oruro Carnival. The devil or Supay represents the Andean pre-conquest underworld figure that was lord of the hills and transmogrified by the Christians as the Devil. Here we have an Indian in full parade costume of Diablo. Everything is finely detailed, and the helmet mask can be lifted off revealing the statues human face. Part of an ear is missing and there are some small cracks where a few breaks were repaired, but it is in good condition for an old piece. SOLD
